Even thought I was attending this wedding as a guest I couldn’t help but take a few shots of my good freind Alexis and his lovely wife Maryline. Their wedding was held at Chapel of São Salvador in Portela das Cabras which is very close to Porto in Portugal. Yhey are such a great couple, I wish them a long and happy marriage.

Kenny & Loretta

The sun was certainly shining for Kenny and Loretta on their wedding day which was held in the Guildhall in Windor with Castle as their backdrop. The reception was held in Monkey Island Hotel.

Adrian & Tamara

In one of the hottest days this year Adrian and Tamara celebrated their big day. The sweltering heat meant that any outdoor photography had to be executed quickly before the bridal party and guests started to wither in the summer sun.
Preparations started at the Marriot hotel in West India Quay next to Canary Wharf where early in the morning, the champagne was already flowing liberally you could sense this was going to be a good party!
The ceremony was held at the Docklands Sailing Centre in the isle of Dogs and it the event and perfect, a relaxed and simple ceremony and a yummy barbecue dinner built up to some lively evening entertainment with the DJ spinning some Reggae floor fillers. A special thanks to Adrian and Tamara for the privilege of photographing their wedding which I think was a good reflection of their own characters, relaxed, fun and full of laughter.

Allan & Ying

Below are images from wedding of Allan and his gorgeous bride Ying, the wedding was a very cosy affair attended by members of the immediate and close family only. The wedding ceremony took place in the Rossetti Room at Chelsea Old Town Hall. Later on we returned to the Lancaster Hotel where we took a few pictures while waiting for a break in the rain. While we were in the hotel bar, I noticed a huge mirror hung on the ceiling, a little help from Ambrose one of the guests to hold my video light and ta da ! one of my favourite pictures of the year.
When the rain finally subsided, we went into Kensington Gardens for a few outdoor shots, the rollerbladers were not planted by me !

SuiWin & Keira

I had the pleasure and privilege of shooting back to back weddings May bank holiday. The first of my two lovely couples from the weekend are SuiWin and Keira. Although I never met them before their wedding day both of them were so incredibly nice and easy going, it wasn’t long before we were all chatting away like old friends. The Brides’ family flew over from China for the wedding of which the reception was held at the Barking Fox which is a 500 year old listed building that had been converted from a pub to a Chinese restaurant. Highlights included music from a swing band and lion dancing performed by the groom’s father.

Every picture tells a story

Following a meeting with a prospective client this week, it was brought to my attention that I had neglected to post some of my more photojournalistic examples of my work on my blog and I wanted to correct this oversight from me.

I like to describe my style of shooting weddings is a mixture of pictures that I have “created” and pictures that I have “taken”, for example I place my bride and groom in some fantastic light, stunning backdrop and crack one of my rather bad jokes, cue lots of giggles and guffaws! “CLICK”, picture “created”. There are also times in a wedding where the images are “taken” with a more photojournalist approach, during the ceremony for example or when something happens and I want to capture the moment without any intrusion. The pictures that are “created” are often the ones that get enlarged and framed for the mantelpiece but it is the pictures that are “taken” that tell the wedding story in imagery and allow my clients to relive all those special moments.

I’m a big fan of Jeff Ascough who I have had the pleasure of meeting at last years’ Canon Pro Conference. He is a highly respected figure within the industry regarded as one of the greatest photographers in the world and the pioneer of the photojournalistic reportage style of wedding photography. He’s been shooting his style of wedding photography for about many years and his images are almost all exclusively “taken”. Back in the olden days wedding photographers had the reputation of being bossy people who used huge brick like medium format cameras mounted on tripod. Their job entailed lining the guests up in a row… SAY CHEESE! SNAP. Jeff had this idea to go to weddings with smaller rangefinder cameras and just snapping away in the background unobtrusively, he confesses that he doesn’t like interacting with the guests or the couple too much. Although, I don’t try to emulate his style 100%, I learnt a lot from his use of available light.

Capturing the emotion

Looking through the archives of 2009, I came across this image from the wedding of Jerrard and Diana, this was a grab shot taken during their reception. I just love the emotion of the groom’s face and his strong passionate embrace. Technically not the perfect picture as the focus point locked on to the hand holding the champagne glass rather than the face but this doesn’t bother me or my client and is a case where emotion trumps perfection.

In wedding photography, often is the case that you only get one chance, here I only had time to fire off one shot before another member of the family jumped into my frame. The challenge of capturing events as they unfold is one of the reasons why I love shooting weddings, it is partly luck but it seems the more weddings that I shoot, the more I seem to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right lens! This reminds me of a famous quote from Arnold Palmer, one of the greatest American golfers “It’s a funny thing, the more I practice, the luckier I get”.
